WELCOME TO BRANT - BRANTFORD CRIME STOPPERS
The Crime Stoppers Program began in 1976 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. It was developed by a Canadian born Albuquerque Detective by the name of Greg MacAleese. While investigating a brutal muder, Detective MacAleese developed the idea of offering a cash reward for anonymous information regarding the investigation. The cash reward and promise of anonymity resulted in the apprehension and conviction of the murderers.
In 1982, Crime Stoppers became an "International" program with the opening of an office in Calgary Alberta. In October, 1984, as a result of local interest by a group of concerned citizens, the Brantford Police Service, local media and other community members, the office of Brant - Brantford Crime Stoppers was opened becoming the fifth program in Canada. At the time of inception the office was manned by one part-time Brantford Police Service Co-ordinator and reports show that in the first month of operation tips were received and three awards were authorized by the Board.
Since inception Brant - Brantford Crime Stoppers has expanded to include two full time Police Co-ordinators, one officer from the Ontario Provincial Police and one from the Brantford Police Service. The Board consists of fourteen civilian volunteer members and there are seven persons employed by the Board excluding the co-ordinators.
This year marks the nineteenth year Crime Stoppers has been serving the Brant - Brantford area and this past year, 2002, was again one of our most productive in stamping out crime in our community.
Our year end statistics for 2002 compare favourably with other programs throughout the province; 682 calls were received resulting in 62 arrests, 117 cases being cleared and $2,330,063.00 in stolen property and illegal drugs being seized by police.
Throughout the years Brant - Brantford Crime Stoppers has been the recipient of numerous Provincial and International awards.
Brant - Brantford Crime Stoppers is very proud of its involvement in the community and looks forward to expanding upon its commitment in the future.
